BQ: I've often heard people say things like, "Guy X is the head of that church." What's wrong with that?
A: God says in Eph 5:23, "For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body." None of us lived a perfect life and sacrificed themselves to purchase the church, so no man will ever be the "head of the church."
If we claim to be disciples of Christ, we must imitate our teacher. Mt 20:25-28 says, "‘You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men exercise authority over them. It is not this way among you, but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant, and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be your slave; just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.’"
"For the entire Law is fulfilled in in this one word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself."—Gal 5:14
